When we started the Adé’s Artist Series in 2021, we weren’t sure what was to come of it, but knew that we needed to start acting. Adé was the type of one of those types of people that made you feel like you were the center of his world when you were with him: he did that with everyone. Because of this, we didn’t fully know the ripple effect he had on so many communities throughout his life from Virginia, to Charlotte, to Chicago, and beyond.

As runners, we’re not good at sitting still, we need movement, we need forward progress. When we heard of our friend Ade’s tragic passing, we needed to move.  We created the series with the goal of keeping our dear friend’s legacy alive by helping others. At the same time others were doing the same, but on a much larger scale.

Through our Artist Series, we have been able to donate nearly $10,000 back to the Adé Hogue Foundation in Chicago, where he passed away. Since the inception, the scholarship has pushed its funds toward a scholarship at UNC Charlotte, a separate scholarship through the Type Directors Club, and events around the country. They have also continued the mission of Adé by supporting BIPOC communities, underprivileged youth, the educational pursuits of fellow creatives, and the cycling and running communities he loved so much.

To make a more direct impact with his legacy here in the city we love so much, in 2025 we will be shifting our dollars directly towards the Broderick Adé Hogue Graphic Arts Memorial Scholarship at UNC Charlotte’s College of Arts and Architecture to keep our efforts here in the city that we love so much. This month we learned that UNC Charlotte received a major sustaining gift, making the Adé Hogue Memorial Scholarship the largest scholarship in its Department of Art & Art History. Our addition includes $2,500 from last year’s efforts, $1,000 from Summit Coffee, and this year’s donations through those that opt out of a medal.

You have an opportunity to add to this scholarship as well. During the next week, we will be donating $5 for every registration for Around the Crown 10K Together with Truist or purchase an item from our merchandise inspired by Adé.
